Harvest
Sineh Ngimet Ayu explains the rice cycle and the process of harvest rice in the Kelabit language. The recording was made in Bario on 10th February 2019.
on the subject of farming
today, people do wet paddy farming
in the past, our elders practiced hill farming
as for how we for do wet paddy farming
you make a divider
they call it "patun"
you make the "patun" or divider properly
after that you slash the grass
and you flood it with water
and keep the water inside
after that they remove the grass from inside the plot
and then you make a plant nursery in the plot
you make the nursery
in June you prepare the nursery
July
June, July, August
at the end of August, we start to plant
we plant our rice
then when it gets to December
or January, we harvest
as for harvesting back then
we didn't do it like today
just slash, like that
we harvested differently in the past
you had a basket
it was tied to your waist
it was tied to your waist
there was a knife you used to harvest with
you get the paddy
and you pick, pick, like this
and you put it in your bag
in your basket which you have tied to your waist
after you have harvested
you separate the grains from the ear
they call it "rumik" when you step on it with your foot
step on it with your foot
you... after you've done that
you winnow
if the harvest is good
then you store it in the rice hut
if the paddy isn't dry
you dry it first
then you put it in the rice hut
so that's about harvesting
from there you...
when you need to have some rice to eat
then you dry the rice that you stored in the rice hut
if you can maintain your rice field
if there aren't lots of you in the house
you can eat that rice for a whole year
after that, then you start the cycle again
in June you start again, you soak [the seedlings] again
