Kelabit Nursery Rhymes
Caleena Lallang Sakai sings a selection of nursery rhymes in the Kelabit language. These are rhymes that would have been sung to comfort children or send them to sleep. They were recorded in Bario on 10th February 2019.
this is something we used to say to calm children
when they want to go to sleep
these are the songs we sing
it goes like this
the bracken fern is clapping its hands
go and bathe in the pond
you dived and caught a siung fish
to feed our family
you want to be the best
how could you not be the best
you are the youngest child
your life has just begun
and here's another one
the young bracken fern is clapping
go and bathe in the river
you dived and caught a white fish
for us to eat together
you are a girl that wants a bigger share
how could you not have a bigger share
you are the baby
a small pouting child
if our children are really crying
then we say
uwa-wa
why are you crying so persistently
crying to ask for some boiled rice
for you and your mum to eat
another one we say
the palang is clapping
the hornbill is tired
inside the long hole in the tree
ask your father to slash the tree
you will have the drumstick
and the hornbill eggs
that's what we say
