The Crow & The Peacock
Muring tells a folk story in the Ba Kelalan dialect of Lun Bawang. The story explains how the peacock and the crow agreed to decorate each other's plumage. The crow decorates the peacock beautifully but the peacock does not uphold his end of the bargain and simply paints the crow black. This story was recorded in Buduk Nur on 1st November 2017.
The story that I'm going to tell now
is about Crow and Peacock
once upon a time, Crow and Peacock met
then they said
"let's paint ourselves and make ourselves beautiful"
"make ourselves beautifully patterned"
after that Crow said
"ok, let's do it", he said
after that Peacock said
"paint me first"
"because I have a bigger body"
"and paint me properly", he said
"yes", said Crow
so then Crow painted Peacock
made him beautiful
and drew patterns on him
and did it properly
and when he was finished
when he had finished painting Peacock
then Crow said
"it's my turn now", he said
"you paint me now", he said
but Peacock said
"I'm tired"
"I don't want to", he said
then Crow said
"but we promised just now!"
so Peacock said
"ok, I'll paint you then"
and he took some black paint
and he painted him all black
then he ran away
and left Crow all alone
so that's why to this day
the Lun Bawang often say "repay the Crow"
or "keep your promise", ok
