Lun Bawang Taboos
Matius Padan explains some of the taboos held by the Lun Bawang in the past using the Ba Kelalan dialect of Lun Bawang. The recording was made in Long Langai on 23rd February 2019.
I am Matius Padan of Long Langai
I am the ketua kampung at Long Langai
I want to explain a little bit about what I know
about the Lun Bawang customs before we believed in God
how we had many things that were taboo
what they call taboos are things that they believed in
like the things in the past
there is a bird which they call "mengai'" (hummingbird)
according to the elders, they believed in this
when they travelled
wherever they wanted to go
like going to work
they can call this bird every time
they one they call "mengai'"
they said when they called this bird
the bird would come
when he arrived
if he flew from the left
the elders said
they could continue on their way
when they called the bird
it made a noise
the sound is cek cek cek cek
that's how it sounds as it arrives
as he flew
if he flew from the right
that means that they could not continue
and they had to turn back
at that time, whatever they wanted to do
they could call this bird
this bird helped them to prepare for the journey
and they depended on it
they depended on this bird
which they called
and it became like a God which they depended on
like their God that they depended on
so when it flew from the right
they say, it cannot be
the people who called him cannot continue
they have to turn back
for what reason?
if they ignore the sign of the bird
when the bird did not allow them to go on
that means that something bad will happen to them
the same when they go to work
if they ignore the sign from this bird
they can get cut
like if they go to the farm
they could get cut
there are dangers that can befall them
and every journey they make
they have to call the bird
and when they want to build houses as well
when they want to build a house
at times when they built houses
if there was an eagle flying above
there were many things that they believed in
before the Lun Bawang believed in God
so they couldn't build that house
they stopped building the house
like if they were making a farm house
they cannot continue because of their work
and if they wanted to have a marriage
or an engagement
when people came across an animal
for example, if a fox ran out in front of them
or a snake slithered in front of them
they had to stop
it doesn't matter how beautiful the girl is
they cannot continue with the marriage
that means they stop
and if they resisted against the deterrants
then bad things will befall them...
either the man or the woman
he will die, or something like that
that is what happened
when they didn't follow the omen of the hummingbird
another thing, there is a type of tree
that the Lun Bawang were really scared of in the past
that is the "teley" tree
the teley tree is similar to the umbrella tree
the tree is as big as a drum
it is called "teley"
this teley tree had a kind of power
because there was a spirit living at the top of the tree
if a branch of the tree fell
even if the branch is dry
it can't be taken for firewood
if you take it
and you burn it
you will be in danger
either you'll get sick or die or something like that
that means, they cannot use the branches of that tree
when the tree gets close to the river bank
or the river carries the leaves into your farm
that means you will be in danger
if you continue farming
even if there is paddy that you have planted
or paddy that is ripe
you can't harvest it
you have to leave it, they say
because they are afraid of the leaves that washed into the farm
if it is a wet paddy field
they can't carry on anymore
so that's something that was bad in the past
the many taboos
or things which they depended on
