Lun Bawang Taboos
Matius Padan explains some of the taboos held by the Lun Bawang in the past using the Ba Kelalan dialect of Lun Bawang. The recording was made in Long Langai on 23rd February 2019.

about the Lun Bawang customs before we believed in God
kudeng peh tau mula' luk inan mali'
how we had many things that were taboo
luk belain deh luk inan mali' nih yeh ineh luk inan deh merepet
what they call taboos are things that they believed in
paad kudeng luk maun
like the things in the past
inan ceh suit luk belain deh mengai'
there is a bird which they call "mengai'" (hummingbird)
ken lun merar maun ineh luk inan deh merepet
according to the elders, they believed in this
bang kereb deh luk nalan
when they travelled
ame' enun-enun lawey deh
wherever they wanted to go

like going to work
bang anid-anid kereb, deh miek nawar suit inih
they can call this bird every time

they one they call "mengai'"

when people came across an animal

for example, if a fox ran out in front of them

or a snake slithered in front of them

they had to stop

it doesn't matter how beautiful the girl is

if a branch of the tree fell

even if the branch is dry

it can't be taken for firewood
bang kereb ko ngalap neh
if you take it
ieh uen ko ngeseb
and you burn it
kudeng nih ko behaya
you will be in danger
sama ada ko mait ataupun ko matey kudeng nih
either you'll get sick or die or something like that
ilung neh peh, a deh miek ngalap angat kayuh nih
that means, they cannot use the branches of that tree
bang kereb kayuh nih mieng iring tengeb fa'
when the tree gets close to the river bank
atau peh ebpa' dih nguit daun kayuh nih me' bang lati'
or the river carries the leaves into your farm
ilung neh behaya
that means you will be in danger
kudeng ko netecu lati' neh
if you continue farming
nan tuu peh padey nibu ko
even if there is paddy that you have planted
ataupun ieh melaak kudeng nih
or paddy that is ripe
na ieh miek ruen deh ngeranih
you can't harvest it
uen necan ieh buri' deh
you have to leave it, they say
ngaceku deh metaut ku daun dih manud me' bang lati' dih
