Camping in the Jungle
Robin Udau talks about camping in the jungle when he was younger using the Long Banga dialect of Sa'ban. The recording was made in Long Banga on 1st December 2017.
so we walked from here
and went to sleep in the jungle
if I remember from here or from Long Peluan
we went to sleep in the jungle
we made a hut
made a hut from tree leaves
they made the structure
after that they put the leaves on
then they chopped some trees into small bits
into small bits
then we lay them piece by piece
that's where we slept
and we had what do we call it...?
we didn't have plastic in the past
we took an "oong" raincover
we made a raincover
it was called "oong liit"
we laid it out
that was where we slept
that's how we slept
we cooked
took water from the stream
that was where we got water to cook with
if you go from here
and sleep in the jungle
you need to bring rice
you bring rice
and a rice pot
because there isn't enough time to fetch bamboo
the place where it grows is far away
you can't see bamboo
so you have to bring a rice pot
and bring food
in the past, we didn't have food like today
like tinned stuff
or tinned sardines
there were no sardines
but usually there were people with us
adults
they went hunting
they hunted stuff for us to eat
or we brought smoked meat
or brought chicken
to fry
or we brought eggs
already cooked
that's what we ate
but the most important thing is that there was salt
ok, that's that
