Jabori
Baya' Yee tells the folk story of Jabori and his mother using the Pei' Angau or Long Banga dialect of Sa'ban. This is the story of how Jabori and his mother come into wealth after a chance encounter with a magpie on a hunting trip. The story was recorded in Long Banga on 12th March 2019.
I'd like to tell another another old story
about Jabori and his mum
those two, they were poor
the mother didn't have enough of anything
the son also had nothing
so they were poor, those two
at first, they were poor
then when Jabori was grown up
"mum", he said, "I want to go hunting with a blowpipe"
"oooh, if you go, what will you use as a blowpipe?"
said his mum
she said
"if that's your plan, you should use the bamboo in the fireplace"
where we sweep all the dust in the kitchen
we call it a bamboo, that's the dust hole.
this is the Saban way
when we make a fireplace
we put a bamboo there to throw the ashes away
that's the bamboo
that's what he used as his blowpipe
"use that bamboo", she said
so the son said
"what can I use as the dart?"
he said
"ooh you should use the tongs from the fireplace", she said
he got the tongs
and cut them into bits to make darts
"what shall I use for the flight of the dart, mum?", he said
"oh use the broom"
she said
he got the broom
and cut it into pieces and threw away the bits
and he made the flight of the darts
so then one day
Jaburi wanted to go hunting
he set off on his way
and walked around
he looked
there was a magpie at the top of the tree
he said
"Jaburi, shoot me with the blowpipe"
so Jaburi went
and shot the magpie
then he fell down
and Jaburi took the magpie home
then the magpie said to him
please cook me
and after you've cooked me
eat me, he said
after that... he got home
and his mother cooked the bird
Jaburi ate it
after eating, he was probably full
he wanted to do a poo
"ooh mum, I want to do a poo"
he said
"if you want to do a poo"
"please go to the attic"
"go upstairs to do a poo"
said the magpie
"yes", he said, "I want to poo", he said
so then he went upstairs
to the second floor
and when he is about to poo
"mum, roll out a mat", he said
she rolled out a mat
and Jaburi went to the toilet
a bag of sugar fell down
a tin of biscuits fell down
the whole kitchen fell
plates fell
cups fell
lots of other things fell
it was full of things
their house, full of things
there were clothes for them to wear
that fell in his poo
all the things they needed
all the things they needed were there
so after that they were rich
because of the bird poo
because the bird had told him what to do
at the start they were poor
at the start they were poor and then they became rich
because of that
so that's the story
that tells us about Jaburi's story
even if I didn't tell it right
we can learn from it
that's the end
