Long Nynyén
Lihan Baya tells the folk story of Long Nynyén in the Pei' Aloon dialect of Sa'ban. This is a folk story about the rivalries of Long Nynyén, Súeng Éeng and Súeng Alau when they go to pick durian fruit across the river. The story was recorded in Long Banga on 15th March 2019.

then Long Nynyén took them out
mai ntoo' wei' atook wan këut ngaai
to pick durian fruit on the mountain
sieng wan këut ngaai
when they go to the mountain
si' lebreu, aliin deh toe'
there was a big stretch of river, and a path to cross
toe' hnah déeh mai nguei wei' atook ngaai
they crossed to get to the durian on the other side
loe' wei' atook ai
there was lots of durian
sieng ngaai
when they got there
aroo' deh mpang yaang yeh
they cut down the branches under the tree
nnet Long Nynyén ai mai ntoo' yeh ngaai
Long Nynyén climbed up to pick the durian at the top
ntoo' mueng yeh
he picked all of them
aroo' deh mpuen yeh si' nah
they made a pile of them
aroo' mpuen yeh
they made them into a pile
rruet yeh lëu'
and he came down

then it was Súeng Éeng who shared them out

she shared it out

then she popped some durian in her mouth

but Long Nynyén didn't see her swallow it

three or four people didn't get a share because of her
"oh am yeh nonoh"
"it can't be like that"
"an taam mungkal yeh lëu',"
"let's collect them back again"

so he asked Alau to share them out again

then Alau shared them out
pi yeh mpiet yeh
and when she had shared them out
anaak lem takep ngaai, waan piet tah yeh aroo' yeh
even the child in the room over there had a share
si'-si' am tah am waan piet aroo' Súeng Alau ai
absolutely everyone had a share thanks to Súeng Alau
"oh pi'yoo' taam," nyeh
"let's clap," he said

so they clapped for her

they didn't clap Súeng Éeng before
pi nah, mai deh lëu'
after that, they went home
"pana éek," nyeh, "pana éek"
"I'm sweating," he said, "I'm sweating"
mai yeh noe tadúel nok toe' pei' ina dei pah
he took the bridge that crossed the river before
itap yaang-yaang tadúel ai
he cut down the ropes under the bridge
mai nah lún ma' atol-atol ina dei
all the people went in a line

but the bridge did not fall down

Súeng Éeng went with them

then Súeng Alau went to the river bank
"arai nceh," nah Súeng Éeng ai nyeh
"come here," said Súeng Éeng to her
mai nyeh pah sieng nyeh nnet tadúel ai
so she went and climbed onto the bridge

the bridge broke

she fell into the river

there was a water snake in the river
si' nah delayeh ai
the water snake was there
milén kuet yeh
it licked her legs
milén yeh mueng-mueng, milén
it licked her all over
bersih yeh
she was clean
belséeng yeh
and shone brightly
wei' ddúet yeh
she looked good
pi nah, mai yeh yoel lebreu ngaai
after that she went to the wide stretch of the river

her husband saw her

and she didn't have a skirt

to cover herself

so he cut his loincloth

and made a skirt for her

and covered her chest

then the two of them went home

they went home
"sieng ngaai tau, an éek mataai ceh,"
"when we get home, I'm going to kill you"

he said to Súeng Éeng
"kai ceh la' mataai éek"
"if you want to kill me"
"uem mataai ne'éek," nyeh
"go ahead and kill me," she said

she turned into a pond with big boundaries

all the durian floated up to the surface
