Baya' Yee tells the folk story of the Mouse Deer and the Bear in the Pei' Angau or Long Banga dialect of Sa'ban. This is a traditional Malaysian folk story about how the Mouse Deer tricks the Bear and other animals in the forest. The story was recorded in Long Banga on 12th March 2019.
as for me I am called Taman Labang Baya'
I am Saban from Long Banga
so a child from England
she is English, but her name is Bulan
in Sa'ban her name is Bulan
I don't know her real name
she wants to hear the story of the Mouse Deer and the Bear
I don't really know the story well
so I'll make lots of mistakes
there once was a Mouse Deer and a Bear
one day Mouse Deer was walking
by the river bank
there was a river
and he was walking by the river bank
then Mouse Deer came across a ring from a fish trap
Mouse Deer took the ring of the fish trap home
then Mouse Deer said
"I'll bring this back"
"and use it to trick people," he said
"to trick the bear or the people"
then he went there
went home
he took it home
then they asked him
"what's that, Mouse Deer?" they said
"this is an old thing from my late grandfather"
"my parent's used this in the past," he said
then he said to the people around him
"let's have a party"
"let's kill a pig and such like"
"so that their spirit will come and eat," he said
so one day they threw a party
the women cooked rice
then they killed a pig
they killed several pigs
then the cooked the pigs
and put it on sticks
they made the rice
after that when everything is cooked
when the pig is cooked
and the rice is cooked
the Mouse Deer said
"let's not eat it
"let's send it down the river"
if it floats down the river"
"then the spirits of our grandparents will eat it"
he said to them
after that the people in the village went
they went and cut down a tree
they made a raft
they cut down a "muang" tree
and make a raft
so then the women carried the rice down to the raft
and also the pig meat
then Mouse Deer said
"I feel bad watching us send it down the river"
"I'll head off now," he said
so Mouse Deer left
and they are about to let the raft go
"in a little while, let go of the raft," he said
off Mouse Deer went
he went to a sand bank downriver
then they floated the rice
and they floated the meat
and Mouse Deer was waiting around the corner
not long afterwards the raft came round the bend
after that he saw a frog, as we call it
so he said
"oh Frog, go and fetch the raft"
said Mouse Deer
so Frog went and caught it
and brought it onto the land
after that, Mouse Deer dug a hole in the sand
he burried the wrapped rice
and he burried the pork meat in the hole
because they put the meat on sticks
after that
as he was burying them
Bear came round the bend
Bear said, "ooh that's Mouse Deer"
"bad luck"
"I was justing looking for you"
"I'm going to eat you," he said
Mouse Deer said
"I know you Bears"
"you always want to eat people"
"do you know what I'm doing here?" he said
he had a spear
we call it "latap oot", it's a small spear
Bear also had a spear
his was a big one
that he uses for whatever
so he said
"Bear, come here"
"let's swap spears," he said
"as if I would want your rubbish spear!" said Bear
"why do you say it's no good?"
"this is a spear for rice"
"this is a spear for meat," he said
so he said, "how does it work?" he said
Mouse Deer picked up the spear
and speared in the...
he had covered it up
a hole for the meat, and a hole for the rice
so he speared there
wrapped rice was hanging from his spear
he speared in the other one
a skewer of pork was hanging from his spear
he was surprised to see that
"hey, your spear is great!" he said
he speared again and again
and picked up the wrapped rice
and did that one
"let's swap spears," said Mouse Deer
"there's no way I would swap my good spear for your bad spear," he had said
that's why he did all that
so after a while they swapped spears
and then he went back
Mouse Deer had speared the exact spot where the meat was
and speared exactly where the rice was
then he put it in Bear's bag
and he went home
and carried the spear home
he meets his wife and children
"where have you been?"
said the wife or the child to him
"I've come from this place, they gave me a spear"
"this is a spear to find rice"
"a spear for food"
"we won't go hungry anymore"
"if I spear this into the ground"
"there will be wrapped rice
"if I spear this in the ground"
"ithere will be pork," he said
not long after that
they ate the rice that he brought back in his bag
after they ate it
he went out of the house
he speared like this
nothing happened
he speared again
nothing
after a while, Bear went down
he went down to the bottom of the stairs
he speared and speared, nothing happened
until the spear was broken
then Bear said, "Mouse Deer must have tricked me," he said
so he went looking for Mouse Deer
he went looking for him
he went and saw
Mouse Deer was squatting under a beehive
Bear said, "gotcha now, Mouse Deer!"
"this time I will kill you"
"for tricking me like that," he said
then Mouse Deer said
"every time you say something"
"you want to kill"
"why is that?"
"I'm looking after this thing"
"I'm looking after this gong, I am," he said
"this is the gong of my great grandfather"
"how do you use this?" he said
"I'm staying here to look after this"
"if I may, what does it sound like?" he said
"would you like to try?" he said
"yes, how does your gong sound?" he said
"if you would like to try it, I'll just move away first," he said
"if you would like to try it, I'll just move away first," he said
"after, when I've got far enough away"
"I'll shout"
"hit it!"
"then I want to hear the sound," he said
when he got there, he shouted
"I'm here, hit it," he said
he picked up a stick to hit with
and hit the beehive
then all the bees came out
and attacked Bear
he ran away
and the bees chased him
wherever he went
the bees followed him
the bees almost killed him
then he ran away
"I'm going to find that Mouse Deer," he said
"If I catch you this time"
"I really will kill you for tricking me," he said
after he walked around
until he saw Mouse Deer sitting by a chilli plant
"there you are!"
"if you trick me again"
"I will really kill you," he said
"whenever I meet you, Bear"
"you want to kill people"
"you know what I'm doing?"
"I'm looking after this medicinal plant," he said
"medicine for anything, stomach ache, headaches"
"if you've been stung by anything"
"I can treat it," he said
"if that's the case, treat me," he said
"yes, I can treat you," he said
"the way people make medicine here"
"go and fetch a cup full of chilli"
"fill it up"
"then take it and pound it"
so he filled up a cup of chilli
so then he pounded the chilli
after that, "how do people use this as medicine?" he said
"If you're ready, I'll treat you"
"stick your bum out, stick your bum out"
he poured the chilli up his bum
Bear's bum was on fire
he screamed and screamed
Mouse Deer ran away
he ran away as fast as he could from Bear
he almost died
because his bum was so hot
"this time, I'm really going to get Mouse Deer!" he said
so he went to look for him
he saw
Mouse Deer was sat on top of a curled up python
"oh there's Mouse Deer!"
"he should be afraid now," he said
then he said he wanted to kill him
"ooh why do you want to kill me?"
"I'm looking after something very old"
you see this
this is a loincloth, a beaded loincloth
if you look at the pattern of the python
it's like a beaded loincloth
"this is very beautiful, I am looking after it," he said
"how do people wear it?"
"if you want to wear it"
"you can wear it," he said
then he got it ready
he said, "if you want to wear it"
"this is the front of the loincloth," he said
he took the head of the python
and wrapped it around the Bear's waist
after that the python uncoiled itself
he wrapped himself around the bear
Mouse Deer ran away
after that the python squeezed him
and Bear died
after that, he was looking for a way
"I should get away," he said
"I want to get across the river," he said
"if I don't get away from here"
"the other bears will want to kill me"
"I better look for a way to get across the river," he said
then he spoke to a crocodile
"Crocodiles," he said, "you should come here"
"I'd like to count you"
"how many of you there are"
"line up side by side," he said
then all the crocodiles came
and lined up until they reached the other side
"you are so many, I'd like to count you"
"I wonder how many of you there are?" he said
"I'll count you," he said
he walked on them
one, two, three, four until ten
then he whacked the head
and killed it
then he carried on
and counted, one, two, three, four until ten
then he whacked the head
and carried on like that until the other side
when he was almost at the end of the crocodiles
he ran across
"bad luck, you're dead," he said
he got to the other side
then he walked around
he was free to walk around
no-one would bother him
because he had already crossed the river
after that time, he met a family of otters
otters, they have four kids
she has four kids
then Otter asks
"where are you going, Mouse Deer?" she said
"oh me, I'm just walking around," he said
"can you stay with my children?" she said
"if you can stay with my children"
"I'll go and look for food for us"
"you stay for one night," she said
"yes, that's ok," he said
so Mouse Deer stayed for one day
he stayed with Otter's children
after that, a little while later
the mother of the otters had gone to look for fish
she had gone to the river bank
a bird shouted, "tabuk-tabuk-tabuk," he said
"people are making peace," said Burung Batok, as they called him
it sounded like Burung Batok was hitting a gong
Pelanook was very happy
so he went dancing
he danced all over the house
and jumped up and down
he stepped on the head of one of the otter babies
and he died
after that, he lost his mind
the otter mother came home
the otter baby was dead
the mother was very cross with him
"why did you kill my child like that?" she said
"well Burung Batok hit the gong earlier"
"people made peace, so I went dancing"
"so I danced and I didn't see your child"
"I stepped on his head and then he died," he said
"we should go to court," she said
she invited people to come
speak, she invited Burung Batok
"Burung Batok," she said
"why did you hit the gong?"
"after you hit the gong"
"Mouse Deer mistakenly thought people had made peace"
"so he went dancing"
"after he had danced"
"he stepped on the child"
"and the child died," she said
Burung Batok said
"I had to hit the gong"
"I saw Burung Bungau", he said
"he put his flag up," he said
"he made his wings into a flag"
"he put it up"
"so I thought people were making peace"
"so I hit the gong," he said
"because Burung Bangau put up his flag," he said
they called Burung Bangau
"why did you come and put your flag up like that?"
"after you put the flag up"
"Burung Batok hit the gong"
"then Mouse Deer went dancing"
"he stepped on the head of a child"
"and he died"
"why?"
"why did you put up your flag?" he said
Burung Bangau said
"why wouldn't I put the flag up?"
"I saw policemen walking with their guns," he said
"they were holding two guns," he said
"I thought there were enemies," he said
"so I put the flag up," he said
so they called the police
the police were ants
they called them
"why did you carry guns?"
"why is it like that?"
"that's why Burung Bangau put up the flag"
"and why Burung Batok hit the gong"
"and why the mother [Mouse Deer] went dancing"
"he stepped on the head of the child"
"and he died," he said
"ooh," said Burung Bangau
"why wouldn't I lift the flag"
"I saw all the small fish swimming away together," he said
"they went under the river bank"
"they went under the stones and all swam away," he said
"why were they swimming away?"
"sometimes there are enemies, I thought"
"so I put it [the flag] up" he said
"that's why we police went to check it out," he said
they called the small fish
"small fish," he said
"why did you swim away like that?" he said
"you swam away, and then..."
"that's why the police came"
"that's why Burung Bangau put up his flag"
"that's why Burung Batok played the gong"
"then the child died," he said
the small fish said
these "patat" are small fish
"why wouldn't we swim away?"
"we saw Mother Otter going to chase us"
"and we went under a rock"
"then Mother Otter went looking for us"
"so why wouldn't we run away from her?"
so they charged her with the crime
"if that's the case, Mother Otter is to blame," he said
"she is guilty"
"because she wanted to kill the fish"
"kill the small fish"
"that's why it all happened," he said
then everything in the courthouse was settled
"she should be killed"
so they killed her
Mother Otter died
all of them died because of Bear [Mouse Deer]
that's the end
that's the end of the story
