Sa'ban Customs
Pun Winnie describes Sa'ban customs relating to farming, marriage, clothes and death in the Sa'ban language. The recording was made in Long Banga on 7th March 2019.
we Saban in the past
we farmed
their farms were big
and if they were lucky
if there were no bad omens
they would harvest
if there is something like a barking deer
we call it "tu'jangaan"
that's a snake
if they see a snake on the road
if they hear some sounds
they just leave the farm
they don't harvest
after that
some of them went...
people used to drink in the past
there were jars of rice wine all the way around the house, you know
they drank
for 8 days they drank
after that
they drank
then they put up a ceremonial pole in the yard
and put a pig on top of it
a big pig
they lift it up
and tie the feet of the pig
then they climb up
and hang it from a hook
whoever is strong enough
will get to the hook
then they scream
they used to scream and shout in the past
today people don't do that any more
us today, we don't do it
some people do put up poles actually
when people have parties
people put up poles today
wedding parties for our children
or for our grandchildren
that's when we put up poles
nowadays, we don't follow the old customs
those who plant rice, as I mentioned before
some go and dive
and bathe in the river
and they drink the water, poor things
they were thirsty, you know
they are thirsty so they drink the water
if they drink water from the river
and there is a bad omen
something bad will happen to them
if you don't follow the omen
that was our Saban custom in the past
they say
if we wanted to get married in the past
they say, our elders
as for me, I wasn't around then
if they got married in the past
now, when people get married
they get married
and people pray for you
they get married in a church
or they get married in a hotel
people these days
but for us in the past
they used a ladle of rice wine to get married
they get the rice wine ladle
and they sit the couple side by side in the house
then they...
they give them the rice wine
and they take it in turns to drink the rice wine
and that makes them married
they say
that was our Sa'ban custom in the past
and now
people believe in God
and now the culture is different
our clothes in the past
we didn't have trousers
we had plain skirts
these skirts came down to here
this is how their shirt was
they wore tree bark shirts in the past, you know
they hit the tree bark
then they sewed it
and used it to make clothes
going to the farm, they didn't have shoes
like chicken feet, poor things
when they went to the farm
and people would catch wild boar
if you caught something, deer, animals
they would smoke them on the shelf
the meat is nicely browned on the shelf
when they go to the farm
then they cut it
and make it into a soup
they drank plain water as well
they didn't have cofee/tea
we didn't have sugary drinks
now people drink sugary drinks
in the past they drank plain water, poor things
in our Sa'ban custom
that was our Sa'ban custom in the past
when we died in the past
the upper classes
when they died
they would cut down trees
to make coffins for them
and they carved designs on it
for the lower classes like me
they didn't do that
they built something using spare planks of wood
they say
that was our Sa'ban custom
now, life is good
life has changed
we buy wood
they bring coffins from the town, you know
the upper classes now
poor us
we weren't well off before
poor things
we had tree bark shirts
we had tree bark trousers
we had tree bark skirts that we wore to the farm
there was a "hrap" tree
there was tree bark
they hit it and shaped it
then afterwards they made it into skirts
and made shirts
to go to the farm in, poor things
our lives were very difficult back then
and the "tueng" bamboo
they make it into a water carrier
they used two sections of bamboo
and we went to fetch water from the river
we went to bathe in the river
and people washed their clothes there
poor things
they cooked
they made wrapped rice
they got up at 3am to cook
and after they had eaten
then they went to work
poor things
so that was our Sa'ban custom
