School in the Past
Robin Udau talks about his experiences of going to school in the 1960s in the Long Banga dialect of Sa'ban. The recording was made in Long Banga on 1st December 2017.
I am Robin Udau from Long Banga
I am going to talk about our lives
in the 60s
so in the 60s
when we first went to school
we went to school in Long Lamai
we walked from here
walking from here to Long Lamai
took about two hours
we were small children in those days
there was no school in Long Banga
there was no school in Long Balong at that time
so we went to school in Long Lamai
it was actually a mission school
later the government took it over
but at that time it was run by the missionaries
after that a school was set up in Long Balong
that is the school in Long Banga today
nowadays
we moved from Long Lamai to Long Balong
in the year 1963, or something like that
so in 1963 or 1964
we went to school in Long Balong
then...
during that time, it was really difficult
we had to walk after all
or take a boat to Long Balong
after that time
Dato Ose and I skipped a year
we did both primary three and primary four in one year
after that we went to Bario
for class five and class six we went to Bario
and we walked
because there was no road
we walked from here
and slept at Long Peluan or Long Beruang
from there we went up into the mountains
from there we went to River Mbreeal
and then from there we came to Remudu or Pa' Mada
and then we arrived there
arrived at Bario
we went to school in Bario for a few years
in those years
for primary five and primary six
we were the very first people to do form one in Bario
form one, form two and form three
so that was going to school in Bario
from then....
at that time we had to walk
it took four days to go from Long Banga to Bario
sometimes we spent the night in the jungle
sometimes we slept at people's houses
that's what it was like
after that... that was five years
but that time was the confrontation
so sometimes we flew
or took a hellicopter to Bario
that's how it was
but there was lots of times we walked
because when we had holidays in the past
it was three wéeks
April, August and December
one week, if they had holidays
we walked for one week
you were at home for one week
and then it took a week to go back to school
that's how it was
and we had to bring our own supplies
our boarding house wasn't particularly good
in Bario in those days
if the government didn't have a lot of money
that's what happens
so that was that
after that, we went to Marudi
for form five
we got as far as form five, form four or form five
after form five, some people went to Tanjung
for form six
and then to university
that's how it was in the seventies
during that time
but I got to form five
after that I came back from Marudi
and went for teacher training
I went for teacher training
and after training I became a teacher
then I taught
then I retired
after retiring
at the age of 60
I retired and became Penghulu
one year after retiring
they made me Penghulu
so now I'm back home
so that's all
