Súeng Chang - Version 02
Lihan Baya' retells the folk story of Súeng Chang in the Pei' Aloon dialect of Sa'ban. The story is about the adventures of Súeng Chang with Red Dog and Black Dog and how she is stolen away to the skies by a spirit. The story was recorded in Long Banga on 15th March 2019.
they went to kill fish with poison
they went to kill fish with poison
bring me to fetch dry leaves
for us to make a shelter
said Súeng Chang
I'll make a space
so that you can make the roof
then in the evening
then they went to pound the poison
they pounded the poison, pound-pound-pound
when day arrived
"let's go and look at the poison," they said
so they went
Red Dog barked over there
there was a fish as big as the lower arm
he barked
and the two of them went to catch it
another fish as big as the armspan
Red Dog caught six fish
they got back to the place
where they were collecting fish
that was where they collected them
"don't take your share now"
"later we'll give you your share"
then
"we'll share it out"
said the man who wanted to be engaged to Sueng Chang
"she is the one who can share it out"
"share it out with us"
then she shared it out
as the child in the room over there
he also had a share thanks to her
"this women is really great," he said
"I will make her my wife," he said
he took her as his wife
she went with them
there was one red dog and one black dog
they went hunting
Red Dog barked
Black Dog came up behind
then they bit the wild boar
they got him
"bring the foot"
"and put him on my back"
"I'll go home"
"he kidnapped Súeng Chang, Grandfather"
he ran off home
"go home safely"
"if I make a signal"
"they have stolen her," he said
he howled there
"oh they've stolen her away"
then they went home
"Grandfather, please cook"
"I'm hungry," said Red Dog
"oooh I feel terrible thinking about Súeng Chang"
"she was stolen"
"don't worry"
"Red Dog will go tomorrow," he said
they were not hungry
but he cooked
and boiled the wild boar
then... they ate
and after eating they slept
then Dog got up
"Grandfather, shoot the door to the skies"
there is the door to the skies
he shot, and they joined together
all the way down to the porch.
"do you know how to do that?"
"I don't know how to do it"
then he threw them around
and it turned into a mountain
he ran along the path to the sky
when he got there, Dog laughed
"that's the sound of the dog," he said
he went down
"I'm going to the toilet," he said
said Anaak Pel'eit
"yes," he said
he went
but he couldn't get back to earth
it wasn't as though he knew the path
her husband that was
afterwards
he didn't come back
"I'm going to have a look"
there were footprints from Big Dog on the yard
"I'm going to have a look"
"there's a door to the sky"
he pushed the door out of the way
and he climbed down
"make this house turn to stone, Grandfather," he said
said Súeng Chang's husband
he made it turn to stone
the big house became a big stone
"look, that's their house"
"they must have died"
he struck the house
and it was totally destroyed
but they had escaped to somewhere else
so they lived
the spirit who took Súeng Chang thinks that they are dead
the spirit who took Súeng Chang thinks that they are dead. that's the end
