Tan Madiip
Taman Ata tells the folk story of Tan Madiip in the Pei' Aloon dialect of Sa'ban. This is a story about a man who comes from the sky to live with the villagers of Tan Madiip. He tests them by setting a fish trap and asking them to wait until the morning to share the fish out but the villagers fail the test when one old man takes a fish. The story was recorded in Long Banga on 10th March 2019.
I'd like to tell a story
I'd like to tell a story that our elders used to tell
that I know
in the past, according to the elders
the elders lived in Pei' Aloon, they said
the was a village there named Tan Madiip
the name of the village
so the elders were living there
and one day, they said
in the early morning
maybe about 8 or 9am
they heard something whooshing down onto the yard.
they didn't know what it was
so they went to see
and they saw a man standing there
he was carrying his child in a basket
a beaded basket
a man was standing on the yard
he said, "I would like to come and live with you"
"I would like to come and live with you"
"that's why I came"
"if you'll let me"
"I will set a "mréeng" fish trap to catch fish for us"
he said to them
"no problem"
"if you want to make a fish trap"
"go ahead," they said
so he went down to the river
went down to the stones at the side of the river
he picked up his child
and put him on a stone
and put him on a stone
and so the child in the bag sat on the stone
then he went to fetch wood
and fetch rottan to make the fish trap
to make the trap so they could catch fish
so he made the trap
and after he had made the trap
he spoke to the people in the village
he said, "if you listen to me then"
"I want to come and live with you here"
that was what he said
"if I come and live with you here"
"I will flatten the area for us to live in"
"the ground twists and turns and has hills"
"I will flatten it for us to live on"
"if you want to see"
"ithis is how I will do it"
he went and stepped on the ground
and a little bit became flat
that could become a village
that could become a village
"this is what I will do for us"
"for us to live together," he said
afterwards he picked up his child
and carried his child
and went back to the place where he landed earlier
where he arrived earlier
then he spoke to them
and said, "don't go and mess with the trap"
"if there are lots of fish"
"there will be lots that we can share out"
"if only a few fish get trapped"
"then we will share out a few"
"if it is just small fish that get trapped"
"if it is just small fish that get trapped"
"ithat's what we will share out"
that was what he said to them
"if you want to live together"
"if you want me to live with you"
"what I said to you"
"you must take it on board and obey it," he said
"I'm going home now"
"tomorrow I will come again to look at the trap," he said
then
he picked up his child
and jumped back up to the sky
they stared up at the sky watching him
the soles of his feet shone bright as he went up to the sky
then when it's dark
they could see lots of big fish going into the trap
the trap was full of fish
then an old man
he was a widower
and he lived alone
he probably didn't have enough to eat
poor thing
so he thought like this
when it's dark, I'll go and fetch one
he won't notice!
that was the old man's thought
so when it was dark
he went to get a fish
a fish that is roughly this long
he got the fish
and went home
he cooked it
and ate it
but actually the man was watching from up high
he knew they had taken one
so when day came about 9am
the sun was out
that's why I say it was about 9am
they listened
and heard a sound whooshing down on the yard
they looked
and the same man as yesterday was standing there
then he spoke and this is what he said
"why is it so difficult for you to learn?" he said
"I told you yesterday"
"if there are fish in the trap"
"we will share them"
"we will share them equally"
"if there are many"
"we will share many"
"iif there are few"
"we will share the few"
"if it is just small fish"
"we will share them, I said yesterday"
"you didn't listen"
"you didn't take my words on board"
"since it's like that, I cannot live with you," he said
he went into the river
and pulled out the trap
the fish floated away
then he said, "if it's like this"
"this is the last time we will meet"
"I am going home."
"you cannot have me living with you," he said
then he jumped back up to the sky
so all the people in the village were scrambling
to collect up the fish
so that is the story that the old people told
but the proof of this is still there today
the rock that he put his child on
and the earth that he flattened
I, your father, know where it is
but it's in Kalimantan, Indonesia
so that is the short story that I will tell
