Walking in the Jungle
Robin Udau describes walking in the jungle and the different types of leeches found in the jungles of Borneo using the Long Banga dialect of Sa'ban. The recording was made in Long Banga on 1st December 2017.
when we walked in the jungle
if it rained
there were loads of leeches
loads of leeches
there are the black leeches
and there are stripey ones
the stripey ones go up the body
they go on your head
or other parts of the body
and it really hurts
what do we say?
they make you really itchy
the ones that get really big
they bite your foot
and suck your blood
when they get really big
they fall off
so that's leeches
that's really bad
that's the worst
in the past, when the river was high
we used to cross the river
we took our stuff off
that was how we crossed the river
Pei' Mbreal over there, or whatever river it was
Pei' Kelapang over there
that was where we crossed
if the water was low, it was easy
otherwise, not so much
used rafts to cross to the other side
to get to the other side
that's what we did
if the weather was good, then ok
no problem
there weren't so many leeches
but climbing uphill
it took ages to climb uphill
before you reach the top
after that we walked for a long time over there
that's how it was
so that's how we walked in the jungle
oh yeah, one more thing
if it rained
someone would bring a raincover
it was like this
people didn't have umbrellas
people didn't have plastic or whatever
so it was made of leaves
what do we call those leaves?
they make it up
that's what we carry
