Walking from Long Banga to Marudi
Robin Udau explains how people used to get from Long Banga to Marudi before flights were available using the Long Banga dialect of Sa'ban. The recording was made in Long Banga on 1st December 2017.
after we finished form three
form three in Bario in the past
we went for form four and form five in Marudi
but we didn't go by plane
how did we go?
by boat
from here we walked two days
from here to Long Metepah
from Long Metepah you get to Lio Mato
from Lio Mato you take the boat
so after walking two days on foot
you take a boat
that follows the river
if the river is high
it takes one day from Lio Mato to Long Akah
Long Akah... oh wait
from Lio Mato to Long Jeeh
then from Long Jeeh you get to Long Akah
from Long Akah you go to Long Miri
and after Long Miri, then you reach Long Lama
from Long Lama you go to Long Ikang
from Long Ikang then you get to Marudi
one whole week!
yeah, that's on the river
we took an engine boat
there were many people on the boat
it was a big boat
there were roughly thirty people on the boat
but the engine was twenty horsepower
or twelve horsepower
it wasn't big
so it was a problem
it wasn't very strong
if the river was good
we could go fast
yeah, another thing
in the past, when we went to school
people would sell things
down in town
like cigarettes
tabacco cigarettes
people from here took cigarettes or rice
after all people didn't have much rice there
so that's how they were in the past
so that's how they were in the past, like that
