Walking from Long Banga to Marudi
Robin Udau explains how people used to get from Long Banga to Marudi before flights were available using the Long Banga dialect of Sa'ban. The recording was made in Long Banga on 1st December 2017.
pi amai form lau
after we finished form three
form lau Bario alam
form three in Bario in the past
mai form paat amai hoo', form imah mai Marudi
we went for form four and form five in Marudi
tapi am amai mayaa' bilun
but we didn't go by plane

how did we go?
mayaa' alút
by boat
weh sieu arai malaan si' nai
from here we walked two days
éraat si' nai mai Long Metepah
from here to Long Metepah
éraat Long Metepah dei ceh sieng Lio Mato
from Long Metepah you get to Lio Mato
éraat Lio Mato ceh maya' alút
from Lio Mato you take the boat
jadi pi ceh malaan kuet weh sieu ina dei
so after walking two days on foot
mayaa' alút ceh
you take a boat
nah mayaa' pei' lah
that follows the river
otak pei' yeh wei' ai
if the river is high
si' sieu ceh mai éraat Lio Mato mai Long Akah
it takes one day from Lio Mato to Long Akah
Long Akah... oh am...
Long Akah... oh wait
éraat Lio Mato mai Long Jeeh
from Lio Mato to Long Jeeh
éraat Long Jeeh baru ceh sieng Long Akah
then from Long Jeeh you get to Long Akah
éraat Long Akah mai Long Miri kah
from Long Akah you go to Long Miri
pi Long Miri, dei ceh sieng Long Lama
and after Long Miri, then you reach Long Lama
pi éraat Long Lama mai Long Ikang
from Long Lama you go to Long Ikang
mai Long Ikang dei tah ceh sieng Marudi lah
from Long Ikang then you get to Marudi
si' igu!
one whole week!
yeah, neu pei' nah
yeah, that's on the river
injin, injin boat amai nah
we took an engine boat
loe' lún lem alút ai
there were many people on the boat
alút raah
it was a big boat
kira lau pluu' brúel lah mayaa' alút
there were roughly thirty people on the boat
jadi injin weh pluu' kuda
but the engine was twenty horsepower
pluu' weh kuda
or twelve horsepower
am yeh raah bah
it wasn't big
jadi masalah yeh
so it was a problem
am yeh pasel lah
it wasn't very strong
yeah, otak pei' wei' nonoh ai
if the river was good
parap arai ajit lah
we could go fast
yeah, si' man
yeah, another thing
lún alam, masa mai sekolah alam
in the past, when we went to school
naan deh masiu-masiu anok lah
people would sell things
mai sa'oot nai hoo'
down in town
ko' ddúet jjúek
like cigarettes
jjúek tabacco lah
tabacco cigarettes
jjúek ataupun brée tan lún waai
people from here took cigarettes or rice
am man loe' brée lún ma' ngaai hoo'
after all people didn't have much rice there
so nonoh ddúet deh alam lah
so that's how they were in the past
nonoh
so that's how they were in the past, like that
